Our Staycation

So, jokingly I call this week LoveFest 2010!! The title might throw off some people reading so don’t be alarmed- I’ll only blog about the family friendly parts of our staycation. Last Friday we left after Justin got off work and drove down to Bristol, VA. Got there super late and stayed in a hotel where my parents were already waiting in the room right next to ours. (Bristol is a halfway point between our house and my parents house.) Saturday morning we all went out to breakfast together and then left Ellie and Hayden with Grandma and Grandpa Schauer. Justin and I drove back home without the kids. I was determined that if we were staying home we were going to be doing fun things that we don’t normally get to do, as much as possible. Saturday night we were going to go out to dinner with some friends, Aaron and Kelly. Unfortunately, Justin came down with an awful cold and felt super bad. We ended up postponing our plans and staying home. We ordered Chinese food and watched a movie. Sunday I went to church and when I got home, Justin was just starting to feel a little more normal so we went out to lunch and went shopping. I had a great time, bought a new leather Coach purse, which I love!! On our way home we decided to go to Laura’s and play some Catan. As we were playing my back really started hurting for some reason. I had no idea what was wrong, but I was really in lots of pain. It just got worse as the night went on. We came home and I was laying down on the couch. I stretched up my arms over my head and accidentally push Justin’s new Captivate , super cool phone into a cup a water. I felt awful!! He immediately knew what to do, powering it off, pulling out the battery and we let it sit in a cup of rice overnight. He LOVED this phone, and was acting like, whatever… it was no big deal. Meanwhile, I felt so bad I wanted to cry. Sunday night I was up pretty much all night with back pain- it was not fun. I was pretty bummed because nothing had gone as I had planned. LoveFest 2010 was a dud. I was trying not to get in a funk. The good thing is…things HAD to get better, and they did. By Monday afternoon, my back was feeling pretty good. I smelled like an old man from the Icy Heat that Justin rubbed into my back, but I didn’t care. One thing we don’t get to do so much is go to the movies, and we both really enjoy them, so Monday afternoon we went to see Salt. It was excellent! After the movie we went to Outback for dinner. We were that couple that sat on the same side of the booth and snuck in a couple smooches here and there. It was so much fun! Tuesday, we woke up and decided to drive to Washington D.C. I love spending time downtown!! I love that in about an hour we can go and see the memorials, monuments, capital building. It is very cool. We went to Union Station. I’d never been, and had heard there is some great shopping and great restaurants. It was super fun. I got a great deal on some sandals and Justin bought a pretty funny George W. Bush t-shirt. We ate lunch at the Center Café, right in the middle of all the hustle and bustle of Union Station. We decided to come home a little bit early and avoid DC rush hour traffic. We went to Borders and without kids, you can actually look at books, and peacefully roam around. Such a new experience for a bookstore for me! The rest of our week was just as wonderful. We went out for ice cream, went to the movies (3 times!!), went out to dinner, played games, went for a bike ride, slept in, and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our staycation! I’m so happy, and so very much in love with my husband. Now… we are on our way to get the kids and I can’t wait to hug them, hold them, smell them (yes, smell them! There is nothing like the smell of your babies hair when his head is laying on your shoulder) and kiss them. How did I get so lucky????
